Great Moments of Robots on Film: Silent Running

March 4th, 2010 by MarkMonlux

Five years before Star Wars hit the big screen there was Silent Running. Many thought it to be an overly moralist pro-ecology themed film that was obviously created by a bunch of dirty hippies. But with the planet the way it is now, you have to wonder if it might have helped if more folks had seen this film. The spaceships featured in this film were later reused in a number of television and movie productions. It was one of the fleet ships in Battlestar Galactica. And the robots, the robots are cool!

Probably the best movie robots ever. Glad they mention the Joan Baez score in the trailer. Certainly the Star Wars robots had nothing on the Silent Running robots.

I totally need to get this movie. I used to have it on laserdisk (yes I fell for that whole thing), but I haven’t seen it in years. They were pretty neat robots, but the movie itself had that whole early 70s fatalism that I got off on as a kid but am now WAY over. Great movie though.

Oh, it’s not that bad…it’s just very 70s.
