CLAW Four-Eyes Council Member, Mark Brill, along with his writing partner and publisher of Northwest Press, Charles “Zan” Christensen, are being featured in this month’s special issue of OUT Magazine. They are part of the prestigious OUT100 list of individuals who are considered to have made a positive or valuable contribution to the LGBT community in 2011.

The honor was bestowed for creating the anti-bullying comic book “The Power Within”, which began life at the 24 Hour Comic Book event in October of last year.  Although the book wasn’t finished that day, it ultimately took on a life of its own, culminating in the international recognition of being recognized by OUT Magazine!

That is the Question that Tacoma, Washington’s COMIC BOOK INK is Challenging the Members of C.L.A.W. (the Cartoonists’ League of Absurd Washingtonians), and YOU, to try and accomplish SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1st! Starting at 10:00am THIS Saturday and Continuing ALL DAY ..into THE NIGHT..and Straight on until the NEXT MORNING on Sunday, October 2nd at 10:00am…That’s right, 24 HOURS!

“This is our 3rd Year issuing the challenge,” said store owner, JOHN MUNN, “And our Homegrown Heroes, the Members of C.L.A.W., are being dared to Return to the Challenge that TWO of them COMPLETED last year…and we challenge them to bring even more of their numbers. And when I say, ‘Return to the Callenge’, it means we are hoping for the chance to put them on public display again..doing what they do best..Creating Comics while continuing to be Absurd. Every year, C.L.A.W. uses this event to promote their SCHOLARSHIP FUND and we know they will rise to the challenge again this year!”

C.L.A.W. is uses this event as an opportunity to seek out Contributors to C.L.A.W.’s Student Scholarship Fund. “One of the reasons we started C.L.A.W. was to establish a Scholarship, however meager, for Art Students interested in Comics and Cartooning,” said MARK MONLUX, one of the founders of C.L.A.W., resident of Fern Hill and Award-Winning Illustrator. “Those of us who draw know just how tight finances can be for someone who is just starting to learn their craft. Besides tuition and books, there is the ever-increasing price of art supplies. Our Goal is to help out with relieving some of the burden, even if its only a few dollars.”

What is 24 HOUR COMICS DAY?

24 HOUR COMICS DAY All Starts with a Challenge!!

The 24 HOUR COMICS CHALLENGE is for a Cartoonist to completely create a 24 Page Comics Story in 24 Straight Hours. A “24 Hour Comic” is any comic story that you make while facing the challenge…even if you take more than 24 consecutively-awake hours to make the comic or if you end after the 24 hours with a story that shorter than 24 pages.

Is this really the best way to make a great comic?

Probably not (although some really cool comics have been made this way), but that is not the real goal. The goal is to have the experience of trying. It’s a creative exercise that can teach you a lot about what you are capable of.

Who came up with the “Concept” of the 24 HOUR COMIC?

A cartoonist named SCOTT McCLOUD. Scott is the leading theoretician in the comics field. A position he achieved with the release of “Understanding Comics” an analysis of the comics form. Head on over to www.ScottMcCloud.com to learn more about Scott and his Insights!

How many 24 HOUR COMICS have been done?

Over 1000 people have taken the challenge so far worldwide. Just last year, Comic Book Ink hosted 18 People for the Challenge.

What is 24 HOUR COMICS DAY?

It’s a Celebration of the Creation of Comics. The first event was held in 2004.

Join Tacoma Art Museum and CLAW artists and compete in a chalk art competition. We challenge you to chalk your “Identity.” The chalk art will be photographed and put online to be voted on. Not feeling competitive? That’s fine, Tacoma Art Museum is free all day and tons of activities during the Best of the Northwest.

1st Place – Year Membership
2nd Place – $25 Gift Certificate from Gift Store
3rd Place – Gift bag

Official Voting Process:
Voting will be done online by users at the Tacoma Art Museum Facebook Page.
Voting will occurs for a week after the festival. Winners will be notified by the art museum through their signup information, collected at the event. Just look for Josh or his assistant (however is holding a clipboard.)

Stop by for a gander at the drawings and illustrations of CLAW member Anique Zimmer, on the walls of the Amocat Cafe on 625 St. Helens Ave in Tacoma. The show will be up all through July with a reception during Artwalk on Thursday the 21st, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM. Everything on the wall is for sale and the reception will accompany CLAW’s July Open Swim drawing jam, so bring a sketchbook or camera!

70s Redux SW drawings that Chris Tirri (CLAW member 7.2) was doing last month!!

2011 CLAW Scholarship winner Kayla Cline

Every year The CLAW selects one lucky “at risk youth” (at risk of being seriously awesome) and awards them the YOUNG CARTOONIST OF THE FUTURE Scholarship consisting of a over-sized novelty check for photographic purposes and a large sum of money. This year The CLAW was able to AWARD $908.24 dollars to Ms. Kayla Nicole Cline, an art student at Memphis College of Art in Memphis, Tennessee.

THUNDERBOLTS rattle across the land… welling up from the deep, primordial ooze on the floor of Commencement Bay rises for the Hand of Carr, the Founder of all that is the 253. Sweat from His Mighty Glistening Brow filled the low lands of the County, thus giving rise to Wapato, Tapps and Gravelly. His muscle raised the earth above the sea, giving Point Defiance her perch.

Mythology is a wonderful thing. Stories as old as our wondering are. It’s easy to imagine yourself sitting around the fire beneath a black sky impregnated with stars, listening to these stories of love, triumph, creation and destruction.

This month at CLAW’s Open Swim, we invite you to come down to Amocat Cafe with us and draw. Gey your pencils, paper and imagination revved up as we delve into the mythological origins of Tacoma, it’s people or anything within the 253. There will be prizes for the Tacoma-related mythological drawing that is the most awe-inspiring. Drinks and snacks will be provided by Amocat, be sure to drink a gallon or two of coffee.

CLAW founders and local authors RR Anderson and Mark Monlux will be signing and selling their books while they draw portraits of the patrons. There will be other merchandise from the CLAW members on sale at the Museum giftshop; Books, Poster, Postcards, and t-shirts.

The Winter Community Festival at Tacoma Art Museum Only Comes Once A Year!
Tacoma Art Museum invites visitors to escape the cold and come inside the museum to create and connect with art for the holidays. Come dressed in your holiday garb (or wear your favorite ugly holiday sweater) and have a family portrait taken in the Mighty Tacoma exhibition. Local youth from the Grant Center for the Expressive Arts, and the Rainier Ringers, a community-based English handbell choir, will fill the museum with joyful music. Hear local Tacoma poets read their poetry to Peter Serko’s photography. All day long enjoy decorating gingerbread cookies, engage in art activities such as creating a paper snowflake snowstorm, and crafting your own holiday card. Take care of some holiday shopping in the Museum Store (where everything will be 10-percent off all weekend long) or at our Urban Craft Fair that features local vendors.

For the month of November, your favorite local cartoonists will be showing some art at the Amocat cafe. These little glimpses will include finished works by individual members and may include a chance to bring home your very own copy.

Please stop in to Amocat. Buy some coffee. Browse some art. Maybe buy some art. Admire the CLAW work…then run home and call every single person you know firmly instructing them to do the same. Rinse and repeat.
